The grid and the rains
Ethiopia's electricity is almost entirely renewable. That is an achievement — and a single point of failure.

Ethiopian highland rainfall feeds the Blue Nile, the Awash, the Omo and the Baro. Hydropower has been the backbone of national generation for half a century, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is the largest expression of that strategy.
A grid built on one resource is a grid exposed to one weather system. A weak rainy season is not an inconvenience; it is a generation shortfall.
Heat under the rift
The tectonic activity that opened the Rift Valley put heat close to the surface. Geothermal offers what hydropower cannot: baseload that does not depend on rainfall in a given year.
A grid that runs on one river runs on one weather system.
Energy planning brief
Interconnectors to Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya turn surplus into revenue. Power trade is diplomacy conducted through infrastructure — harder to walk away from than a communiqué.
